Science - Volcano Research Project and Presentation


Here is our Google Earth Virtual Field Trip, 10,000 Years of Volcanoes, created by the Smithsonian Institution Global Volcanism Project (GVP).  Remember to open it in (or copy and paste it into) a Chrome browser for best results and wait a few minutes for it to load.  Then, explore!

To help you select a volcano, here are some suggestions to check out (you do NOT have to choose one of these) -

ONCE YOU SELECT A VOLCANO (OR TO HELP YOU DO SO), CONDUCT YOUR RESEARCH USING THE WEBSITES BELOW!
Be sure to follow the directions in your project packet and use the references below for your research. 
Because I know these websites are reputable, YOU MUST START WITH THE WEBSITES ON THIS PAGE and ask permission to use any other websites for this project:

  • http://volcano.si.edu/ - Smithsonian Institute’s Global Volcanism Program GVP
    • Once there, click on "Database" --> "Volcano Search" --> Type in your main Volcano Name (leave out Mount, Mt), click "Search Volcanoes"
  • http://volcano.oregonstate.edu/ - Oregon State University’s Volcano World
    • Once there, click on "Volcanoes" --> Choose "Famous Volcanoes" --> Pick a type to explore
    • OR, click in the top right Search box and type your volcano name.  Then, choose from the list of results.
    • You can also click on "Adventures and Fun" --> "Virtual Volcano Fieldtrips" and explore that way.
  • https://www.volcanodiscovery.com/ - Volcano Discovery (Cool videos here! Be careful not to click on the paid ads!)
    • Once there, SCROLL DOWN to "Volcano Database" and click on it --> CLOSE the pop up ad by clicking the "X" in the top right corner --> Find and click on your volcano
  • http://volcanoes.eurovolc.eu/ - European Catalog of Volcanoes 
    • Once there, IN THE LEFT box, Click to sort the list by Country or by Alphabet --> Scroll through to find your volcano --> Click on its Name --> Click on the link to "Catalogue Information" 
      (NOTE: YOU MIGHT HAVE TO CLOSE THE BOX THAT APPEARS ON THE RIGHT OF THE HOMESCREEN ("Welcome...") by Clicking the "X" in its top right corner)
  • https://www.usgs.gov/programs/VHP/usgs-operates-five-us-volcano-observatories/ - US Geological Survey Volcanic Hazards Program's 5 Volcano Observatories (Good source for US Volcano NEWS)
    • Once there, click on any of the regional Volcano Observatories (if you know your volcano's location).  Then, you can search for your volcano.   
  • https://www.usgs.gov/observatories/hawaiian-volcano-observatory  - USGS Hawaiian Observatory AND Other US Volcanoes (Good source for NEWS)
    • Once there, ON THE LEFT, click on "Volcanoes" --> Click on your volcano 
    • OR, you can use this to search for other US Volcanoes using the RIGHT dropdown box. 
  • http://www.avo.alaska.edu/ - Alaska Volcano Observatory (Alaskan Volcanoes)
    • Once there, click on "Volcano Information" --> "Volcano List" --> Select and click on your volcano  
  • http://volcanoes.usgs.gov/observatories/cvo/index.html - USGS Cascades Volcano Observatory (Northwest US Volcanoes and NEWS)
    • Once there, ON THE RIGHT, select and click on a volcano
    • OR, you can use this to search for other US Volcanoes using the RIGHT dropdown box. 

IF YOU ARE STUCK for a little more information.... Try this one:

    • Once there, type your volcano name into the SEARCH box at the top of the page.  Then, read the information.


DON'T FORGET TO COPY AND PASTE ALL OF THE LINKS THAT YOU USE ONTO YOUR NOTE-TAKING SHEET!!!!
Use the right click function on a mouse OR Control-C to copy and Control-V to paste into the textbox you create in Kami.

You may only use your textbook, additional books from the school or public library you find, and/or the below approved links to help you find information for your travel brochure.  Keep in mind you might have to search within the websites below to find exactly what you are looking for.  You can also try to use "control F" to search for your specific topic of interest on theweb page.  You should be able to find everything you need at the websites below, but you will have to use more than one; after all, you are researching your topic!  You must get permission to use any others.
