Writers' Checklist

ALWAYS start with a topic sentence (what is your paragraph about?)

Did you introduce your topic in the introductory paragraph?

Hook sentences get your readers' interest:  

  • Ask a question
  • Dialogue
  • Onomatopoeia/sound effect
  • Interjection
  • Starting fact 

VARY your sentences

  • Start with "To" and an action word
  • Start with a prepositional phrase   "After the party ..." "During the summer . ."           "Next to . ."
  • Start with an "ing" word  "Running after the dog . ."  "Leaving the house. ."

FINISH with a closing sentence.
