Kenilworth Public Schools will welcome veteran educator John Perillo as the new principal of David Brearley Middle-High School.
The Kenilworth Board of Education approved Perillo’s appointment at its Aug. 12 meeting. Perillo will succeed Jeremy Davies, who was recently appointed Kenilworth’s superintendent of schools.
Perillo has 30 years of experience in education, serving the last five years as assistant principal at Hightstown High School in East Windsor. He began his career as an instrumental music teacher for elementary and middle school students before transitioning to curriculum supervisor roles. Perillo was the K-12 curriculum supervisor of arts education at East Brunswick Public Schools and Hamilton Township Public Schools.
Perillo said his experience in the arts has shaped his leadership style and believes a strong arts program can improve overall academic performance, provide valuable skills such as collaboration and discipline, and provide a creative outlet for students.
Brearley introduced a successful dance program two years ago and is enhancing arts opportunities for students by renovating its auditorium.
“I can’t wait to see the concerts and performances in the updated auditorium where our students can showcase their talents beyond the classroom or athletic fields.” Perillo said.
He added that he’s also excited about the addition at Brearley that will make room for sixth-graders starting in September 2025.
Perillo said he takes a student-centered approach to education that emphasizes personalized learning.
“My experience with grades 6 through 12 has shown me the importance of fostering student growth and preparing all students for their future,” he said.
He looks forward to contributing to Brearley students’ success, and will prioritize listening to staff, students and parents to learn about the school’s strengths and challenges.
“Building strong relationships and trust within the school community will be crucial. I’ve already had the chance to meet several students and staff members, and they were incredibly welcoming. I’m excited to meet the rest of the school community and become part of the DBMHS family,” Perillo said.
Davies said Perillo has a lot to bring to the DBMHS community.
“Mr. Perillo successfully navigated his way through a competitive pool of principal applicants and a rigorous interview process,” said Davies. “He demonstrated a vision that will push Brearley forward in both the STEM and humanities fields; a compassion for creating a caring, student-focused school community; and a keen ability to connect with students, parents, and the larger Kenilworth community. I am excited for his leadership and fully trust him to take Brearley to a new level of excellence.”
Perillo earned a master’s degree in educational leadership and a bachelor's degree in music education from The College of New Jersey. He also has certifications as a supervisor and a principal from Caldwell University.
He and his wife, Kim, have two children, ages 18 and 15. The family enjoys watching soccer games, going to the theater, and spending time at the Jersey Shore.
