By Joy Przywara - Supervisor of Guidance and Assessment

Mindfulness is the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us.  Using these practices will help us contend with stress, anxiety and allow time to unwind and be present in the moment. Additionally, there’s an abundance of research that posits mindfulness in schools leads to greater empathy, engagement and focus, all of which support student achievement. Here are some mindfulness resources:

  • Children and toddlers can also enjoy the benefits of mindfulness. The video YouTube links below are great ways to teach children the benefits of yoga. These "Cosmic Kids" yoga poses are introduced through play with superheroes, characters like "squish the fish," and other child centered approaches. Many of these have Disney and famous literary references. The topics will keep our youths’ attention, but if you’re like me, you may want to embrace your inner child and do these poses with or without your children for your own enjoyment.  Namaste!

Wishing you wellness, happiness and joy.
