Happy New Year!
January 3, 2020
Dear School Community:
I'd like to welcome in the new year by continuing to
share updates on our district goals. In this update, I'm zooming in on
District Goal #3 in the strand of Communication and Collaboration. Our
goal is "to
develop and strengthen our relationships with both community and internal
stakeholders through effective and enhanced communication and collaboration
efforts."
We've taken several steps to meet this goal and actualize
the belief that more communication isn't better. Different
communication isn't better. Better communication is better.
Here's a list of actions we've recently engaged in as part of our realization
of this goal.
- We issued a community-wide Communications Survey in the
Spring of 2019 to ascertain current communication avenues that our school
community considers effective and to also identify areas for communication
growth.
- We assembled a group of twenty community members to
participate in a focus group around district-wide communications. The ideas
shared and workshopped helped to inform some of the communications
advancements outlined below.
- We redesigned our most forward-facing communication
vehicle, our district website. The new design is rid of outdated and
superfluous information. It's simplified through the creation of one
main site instead of several. It is generally more user-friendly with
fewer clicks to get to the most accessed information, and it's more modern in
its form and thereby more aesthetically pleasing.
- We implemented a "Friday Folder" to catalog
important, but not urgent, school and community news that may be of interest
to stakeholders so that everyone is kept informed while mainstreaming
communication efforts.
- We continue to send bi-monthly Superintendent Updates, like
this one.
- We publish monthly building newsletters, written by
Principals Murphy and Chibbaro, that highlight school news and important
information.
- We recently instituted a "Leadership Blog" to
create an intellectual space for members of the district's leadership team to
share thinking about educational topics that help build bridges between home
and school. We plan to post them monthly on our website, including our
most recent entry written by Ms. Dana Cansian, one of our Supervisors of
Curriculum & Instruction. Access it here: https://www.kenilworthschools.com/board_of_education/leadership/leadership_blogs/december_2019
- We're aiming to have a greater presence in Kenilworth Life & The Local Source as
a way of sharing with the broader community the great things happening in our
schools.
- We've ramp-ed up our postings to have a greater social
media presence. Many administrators, teachers, coaches and club
advisors have their own social media pages. Some pages you may want to
follow are:
- Facebook - @KenilworthBOE
- District Instagram - @KenilworthSchools
- Harding Elementary School Instagram -
@harding_elementary
- Brearley Middle-High School - @Brearley_Bears
I hope these aforementioned efforts keep you dialed into
some of the exciting and innovative things happening in our schools, on our
playing fields, and on our arts' stages.
Have a great weekend!
Sincerely,
Kyle C. Arlington
