Class Syllabus and Expectations English Department:

Reading:

WHOLE CLASS NOVELS/READING SELECTIONS:

Novels and selections from our Literature Anthology that we will read as a class. There will be quizzes, tests, writing assignments, and other assessments based on this reading. 

INDEPENDENT READING:

Either self-choice or selected based on a theme or genre chosen by the teacher Reading will be done in class and at home. You are expected to track your books and make wise selections BOOK CLUBS:

Choice of book that you will read with a small group You are expected to prepare for and participate in your group's discussions

Writing:

DAILY WRITING:

Reader Notebook & Writers Notebook entries We will learn grammar, spelling, and vocabulary necessary to improve our writing. Reading responses/open-ended responses Writing forms and skills in preparation for the NJSLA

LONG--TERM WRITING: Guided Writing Assignments (writing forms, such as persuasive essays, narrative writing, etc.) that we will focus on using process writing You will evaluate your progress as a writer by assembling a portfolio of your best works Independent Reading projects and essays

Unit 1- Managing Your Time: Students will discover ways to manage their time to effectively enhance their study habits.

Unit 2- Visual Aids: Interpreting and Creating Visual Aids

Unit 3- Using Reference Sources: Using Reference Sources

Unit 4- Graphic Organizers and Charts: Graphic Organizers and Charts

Unit 5- Solving Math Word Problems: Solving Math Word Problems

Grading Policy

Your grade will be determined by a number of assessments: tests, projects, quizzes, notebooks, and homework.  Grades will be calculated using a weighted average with the following values given according to the district’s English Department Grading Policy. Per the district, the following grading policy will be in effect for all English courses except AP English Language and AP English Literature:

Major Assessments: 50%

Major assessments include major unit tests, essays, papers, and projects. Each marking period will have at least three major assessments

Minor Assessments: 30%

Minor assessments include quizzes on reading, SAT words, and literary terms, and may also include shorter writing assignments. Students will have several different minor assessments throughout each marking period.

Alternate Assessments/Assignments: 20%

Alternate assessments and assignments include reading assessments, short or informal writing prompts, rough drafts, journals, group discussion, short presentations, and class work. Again, students will have several of these throughout each marking period.
