June 2019

June 21, 2019

Dear School Community:

I’m rapidly approaching my 100th school day as the Superintendent of the Kenilworth Schools.

For historians, The First 100 Days of a leader’s progress reference Franklin D. Roosevelt’s first 100 days in office, when he began rolling out an unprecedented 15 pieces of legislation.  He set a 100 day standard against which most subsequent presidents have been measured.

For elementary schools, the 100th day of school usually marks a counting-themed celebration to recognize all that’s been accomplished in the school year so far.

For me, the 100th day mark has provided an opportunity to reflect on what I’ve learned so far in and about Kenilworth, as well as my vision for what school should be - a vision that is tied to my code of personal teaching and learning beliefs that I’ve shared previously but am including again here.

Since my arrival, I’ve met with many parents who are invested in our community and are interested in an enhanced, progressive approach to teaching and learning that will lead to greater achievement gains.  I’ve met with groups of teachers who have been thoughtful and reflective about their teaching practice and open to new ideas to stay current in their teaching and to innovate learning.  And, I’ve met with countless students who have helped me identify and celebrate our schools’ successes and work to zoom-in-on areas in need of attention.

Many of the students with whom I’ve met will be graduating today.  Congratulations to the members of the Class of 2019 who have indicated that they feel prepared and ready to conquer the world!
A list of where they’re heading in September is attached here.

To continue to ensure a path of progress, this summer, work will begin, or continue, in several important areas:  technology upgrades, facility upgrades, including a renovation to Brearley’s gymnasium, and curriculum and instruction projects, including curriculum revisions and new program adoptions.

The excitement of September awaits us as we look to:

  • welcome several new teachers to our district

  • welcome two new administrators

  • begin to create a communications plan that allows for enhanced, multi-directional communication, including a greater social media presence and a generally better website

  • forge a STEM roadmap to enhance our learning, programs, and resources for STEM over time

  • facilitate a wide and rich conversation about our
Future Ready practices in our district

Until then, I hope these next two months provide you with an opportunity to
Rest, Relax, and Rejuvenate and find you ready to return in September!

But before you do, I hope you and your children find some time to read a few good books.  For possible titles that span grade levels, check out this suggested list.

Thank you for the opportunity to work for and with you.

Have a great summer!
