Creating Life-Long Readers
By Dana Cansian, Supervisor of Curriculum & Instruction

Reading for just 20 minutes a day provides substantial benefits for children and teens alike.  Here are some tips to make reading at home enjoyable.

  • Visit the Kenilworth Public Library.  Every month the library hosts events catered to different age groups.  Check out their Facebook page here. https://www.facebook.com/kenilworth.public.library/
  • Model the importance of reading by showing your child that reading is essential. Lead by example and read alongside your child.
  • Ask your child about reading strategies he/she has learned at school. Have your child use these strategies when reading at home.
  • Have conversations about what your child is reading.
  • Allow your child to pick a book in which he/she is interested.  Choice is important and makes reading more meaningful.
  • Consider reading the same book as your child.  This will enhance the conversations you have.
  • Avoid discussing labels such as children’s guided reading levels or Lexile levels.   These labels can take the joy out of reading.
  • Create a cozy spot at home dedicated to reading.

Check out these interesting statistics that outline the power of just 20 minutes of at-home reading for children.  It’s our district’s hope that by partnering together, we may raise a community of life-long readers!
