The David Brearley Middle School student spotlight for February is 8th grader Ms. Karen Perez-Velazquez. Karen has made quite an impression on her teachers and staff over the last 2 years. Karen is kind, hard-working, and driven. She is a standout in the classroom as well as an active member of the student council.
This year Karen’s peers voted her as student council vice president where she has accepted the responsibility with the same attitude that she does her studies and interests. She has been vital in setting up and executing bake sales, student council events, and advertising the middle school spirit week.
Karen’s kindness is evident as soon as you step into any of her classes. She is always willing to assist her classmates in group projects or assignments. She is one of the first to offer a helping hand to any student in need.
Being bilingual, Karen is also a major asset to many of our ESL students, making them feel connected and welcome, while translating and explaining assignments, school policies, and procedures.
Karen’s teachers describe her as well liked and respected by her peers. They consistently shared that she is a pleasure to have in class.
Karen truly embodies what it means to be a Brearley Bruin.
